Tomas Patterson

I am a furniture maker based in Newcastle, Australia. I have a passion for making beautiful objects for a functional use.

My background is originally in design and Architecture. My interest in structure and functionality brought me to study traditional Japanese carpentry in Kyoto followed by a year long intensive course at the Sturt craft school in Mittagong. There I was taught by some of the finest makers in Australian Fine woodworking.

My work is grounded in functional design, with explorations

in the playful and whimsical. Beauty is found in the refined

expression of structural details; I see it's imperative function

to be inherently beautiful.

I use time-tested solid timber construction and joinery, along with traditional hand tools to achieve the highest quality outcome. I take the time to analyse timber and grain to minimise unwanted wood movement. I have immense pride in my work and in sharing this experience with you.
